Bristol Palin, 19, performed a version of Randy Newman’s hit on the 11th series of the dance show and explained that she had not always taken her mother’s advice.
The 19-year-old was thrust into the public spotlight when Mrs Palin stood for Vice-President as John McCain’s running mate in the 2008 American election.
Mrs Palin, who has advocated the virtue of no sex before marriage, faced some embarressment when Bristol and her boyfriend revealed during the election campaign that they were expecting a baby.
“My life has been told and spread out in the tabloids. But I am just a regular girl and this is definitely the most frightening thing I have ever done in my life,” Bristol said.
Before her performance she added that she would be “thrilled” if she brought “some sexy to the cha cha” and “didn’t embarrass her mom”, who was not in the audience.
Bristol appeared in a sparkling grey office suit, imitating the style of her mother, currently the darling of the Right-Wing Tea Party movement, but removed it to reveal a short red dress.
Her appearance followed in the footsteps of her former fiancé, Levi Johnston, who has publicly criticised Mrs Palin in US tabloids.
The judges rated her performance as promising, but far less impressive than “Dirty Dancing” actress Jennifer Grey’s Viennese waltz to Otis Redding’s “These Arms of Mine.
The former “Baywatch” actor David Hasselhoff tied for the worst performance.
